Three Ways to Send Money to Someone in an Illinois DOC Facility
Sending money to someone in an Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) facility is straightforward once you know your options. Here are three ways to do it—two electronic methods and the JPay money order lockbox process.
IDOC accepts electronic deposits through a few approved services, and the per-transaction limit varies. JPAY and Send2Corrections (a Western Union service) let you send up to $5,000 in a single deposit. MoneyGram is more restrictive - electronic transactions cap at $3,000, even when other methods allow more.
Note: Transaction limits are the biggest difference between deposit methods, especially for larger amounts. Double-check the vendor's screens before you submit so your deposit goes through without issues.
Prefer to mail funds? IDOC accepts money orders, but they must follow JPay lockbox rules. The money order has to be $999.99 or less and made payable to JPay. Include the JPay lockbox deposit slip, and make sure the paperwork lists the incarcerated person's name and IDOC number, plus your name and address as the sender. Mail everything to the JPay lockbox at PO Box 260250, Hollywood, FL 33026 - not to the facility.
- ✓ Make sure the amount is $999.99 or less
- ✓ Make the money order payable to JPay
- ✓ Include the JPay lockbox deposit slip
- ✓ Include the incarcerated person’s name and IDOC number
- ✓ Include your (sender) name and address
- ✓ Mail it to: PO Box 260250, Hollywood, FL 33026
Watch out for outdated deposit instructions. IDOC no longer uses GTL (ConnectNetwork/ViaPath) for deposits. If you see GTL on an old flyer, screenshot, or forum post, ignore it and stick with the vendors IDOC currently lists.
If speed and convenience matter most, electronic deposits are your best bet - just mind the caps. JPAY and Send2Corrections (Western Union) allow up to $5,000 per deposit; MoneyGram tops out at $3,000. Money orders have a lower limit ($999.99) and more requirements: make it payable to JPay, include the deposit slip, list the incarcerated person's name and IDOC number, add your name and address, and mail it to the JPay lockbox - not the facility. And skip any instructions mentioning GTL; IDOC no longer uses them.
Reminder: Check limits before sending - $5,000 for JPAY/Send2Corrections, $3,000 for MoneyGram, $999.99 for money orders. For money orders, include the required details (name, IDOC number, your name and address), attach the deposit slip, and mail to the JPay lockbox address.
