What You Can (and Can’t) Bring to an IDOC Visiting Room
A visit goes smoother when you walk in with the right ID and leave everything else in your car. Use this checklist to avoid getting stopped at the door or having your visit cut short.
ID Required
- ✓ Two forms of identification (adults) - one must be a current, state-issued photo ID
- ✓ Be ready to provide your vehicle information when you arrive
Leave all electronics in your car. Cell phones, tablets, smart watches - none of it is allowed in the Visiting Room. Bringing them to the door can delay your check-in or end your visit before it even starts.
- ✓ Food
- ✓ Drinks
- ✓ Smoking materials
- ✓ Currency
- ✓ Packages
- ✓ Purses
- ✓ Bags
- ✓ Books
- ✓ Magazines
- ✓ Sunglasses
- ✓ Personal keys
If you take medication, plan ahead. IDOC doesn't allow pills or medication in the Visiting Room. The only exceptions are physician-prescribed heart medication or asthma inhalers - and those must be in a properly labeled container.
Dress with the rules in mind. Your clothing needs to be appropriate and in good taste. Nothing that signifies a Security Threat Group, advertises illegal activity, or contains sexually explicit, offensive, or degrading words or images. If an outfit could be read as gang-related, promotes drugs, or has explicit graphics, choose something else before you leave home.
Getting turned away happens. The facility's Chief Administrative Officer can deny, suspend, or restrict visits for reasons including security concerns, space availability, disruptive conduct, abuse of visiting privileges, or violations of state or federal laws. Showing up with prohibited items can also get you stopped at the door - so keep your car clean and only bring what's allowed inside.
