What You Can (and Can't) Bring to an IDOC Visiting Room

Quick Prohibited

  • Electronic devices (including cell phones, tablets, and smart watches)
  • Food, drinks, and smoking materials
  • Purses and bags
  • Books and magazines
  • Sunglasses
  • Currency (cash)
  • Packages
  • Personal keys

Reminder: Leave prohibited items at home or secured in your vehicle so you don’t lose time at check-in or risk having your visit denied.

You can't bring pills or medications into the visiting room. If you normally carry something "just in case," plan ahead - most of it needs to stay in your car.

Two exceptions: physician-prescribed heart medication and a physician-prescribed asthma inhaler. Heart medication must be in a properly labeled container.

Tip: Bring allowed medication in its original, properly labeled container and tell staff about it during check-in so it doesn’t become a problem at screening.

Every adult visitor needs two forms of ID. One must be a current, state-issued photo ID.

You'll also need to provide vehicle information. Before you get in line, have the details ready for the car you arrived in.

  • Bring two forms of ID (one must be a current state-issued photo ID)
  • Have your vehicle information ready to provide at check-in

What you wear matters. Dress appropriately for a prison environment - staff can deny your visit if your clothing doesn't meet the standard.

  • Clothing that advertises or suggests Security Threat Group (gang/STG) affiliation or other illegal activity (for example: gang-related symbols, slogans, or “crime-themed” messaging)
  • Clothing that is sexually explicit, offensive, or degrading (for example: explicit graphics or profanity)
  • Clothing that reveals the buttocks or breasts (for example: overly revealing tops or bottoms)
What You Can (and Can't) Bring to an IDOC Visiting Room
  1. Empty your pockets and leave extras behind - Keep electronics, cash, keys, bags, reading materials, sunglasses, food/drink, smoking materials, and packages out of the Visiting Room.
  2. Handle medications the IDOC way - Don’t bring pills or medications unless it’s physician-prescribed heart medication or a physician-prescribed inhaler.
  3. Pack heart medication correctly - If you must bring it, keep it in a properly labeled container.
  4. Bring the right identification - Have two forms of ID ready, including a current state-issued photo ID.
  5. Have vehicle information ready - Be prepared to provide it during check-in.
  6. Dress conservatively - Avoid clothing tied to STG/illegal activity, anything sexually explicit/offensive/degrading, or anything that reveals buttocks or breasts.

Bottom line: Prohibited items or clothing that exposes buttocks or breasts can get you delayed at the door - or denied entry altogether.
